The Independant Newspaper, 1876
This is a scan of a copy from microfilm located in the downtown Santa Barbara public library. There are a few missing editions of the paper in late 1875 and early 1876. No mention of the mass insanity can be found in the remaining editions. However for some reason the 1852 survey and its related problems become a hot topic in a number of issues. I have only one explanation for this.
The survey of the city started the problem and set the stage for the effort to force an official understanding. Subconsciously the editors had their minds on the origins and found notes or copy from the 1852 event to report on it in 1876.
This excerpt from the paper was one of many describing the survey and has language that connects the local Indians to the survey. I was told in a trance by the Medicine man of the survey, the surveyor, the records and what it means to Medicine people.
