New forms of pollution are killing algae by rendering water unable to hold dissolved oxygen gas.
Here is somewhat normal algae in a creek. This is the algae filimintis that floats on the surface.

This is the type of Algae that grows on the bottom. Both types require large amounts of oxygen in the water at night. During the day they take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen. The bottom algae requires more oxygen in the water than the surface algae. On the surface the algae can take a certain amount of oxygen from the air above so it is the last to die.

This creek is in the Santa Barbara area. It happens to not have a large air basin near it. The ridges are low and the canyon serpentine so very little condensing moisture carrying MTBE carbonates makes it to the watershed. Ten years ago the entire rock would be covered with algae and the bottom too.
